l5h-backup

A private backup utility for one person's own servers.

l5h-backup takes encrypted backups of personal server infrastructure and stores them in the operator's own Google Drive. It is a single-user tool, run by its author for his own machines. It is not a product, it is not offered to anyone else, and there is no sign-up.

How it works

Backups are produced by restic, which encrypts and deduplicates them locally before anything leaves the machine. The encrypted result is uploaded to Google Drive by rclone using the Google Drive API. Google only ever receives encrypted archives; the encryption key never leaves the operator's own hardware.

What it asks Google for

A single scope, drive.file, which grants access only to files the application itself creates. It cannot see, read or modify anything else in the Drive account, including files created by any other application.

Who runs it

Christian Limpach. Questions: backup@l5h.net.
